I began developing the Birdwatching social app during Daily UI 006. At that point, I hadn't settled on a name for the app since I was relatively new to the challenge and hadn't yet considered repurposing ideas..

Comparisons

At this stage, I wasn't yet familiar with the concept of a competitive audit. However, I did conduct some informal comparisons with existing birdwatching apps. Drawing inspiration from social networking apps, I integrated features that would enhance the user experience of the Birdwatching app.

Audubon Bird Society

I referenced an app by the National Audubon Society, a free and comprehensive field guide to North American birds, to develop features for my app.

While I didn't have ChatGPT back then, I now use it to collaborate and refine ideas for design and research.

In this moodboard, I've included images of birds, people birdwatching alone, and within a community. These visuals help me envision the desired look and feel of the app.

Colors

While birds are known for their vibrant colors, I opted for this palette to evoke a sense of peace and tranquility that people often experience while birdwatching.

It also draws inspiration from the natural environments where birds can be found, including the sky, forests, and the sea.

Logo

I incorporated the bird icon from Phosphor in Iconify for the logo. However, I'm considering creating my own custom bird icon in the future to make the logo more unique and personal.

For the text, I utilized the Inter Typeface and integrated a bird motif within the last 'O' to symbolize a telescope. Keep in mind that this is an unofficial logo and app name, so I may introduce alterations in the future to refine the branding.

Typography

I opted for the Inter Typeface because of its simplicity, and I rounded the lettering in the logo to maintain a subtle and unobtrusive appearance.

This choice ensures that the font doesn't overshadow the app's content, keeping the user's attention where it matters most.

I employed a combination of Regular, SemiBold, and Extra Bold font weights to create clear distinctions between the text elements, rather than relying solely on a thicker font. This approach enhances readability and design aesthetics.

Future Plans

I will developing a case study to improve the Birdoo. I am aware of existing similar apps, and my goal is to identify and implement new features and functionality that will make the app more useful and engaging for users.

One idea I have is to incorporate binoculars into the last two Os of the app's logo. This would be a subtle way to visually communicate the app's purpose and target audience.

In addition to improving the logo, I am also exploring ways to improve the app's user experience and make it easier for users to discover and connect with each other, as well as with the birds they love.
